to main content Accreditation Options & Certifications for Hospitals | The Joint Commission

Hospital Accreditation

The Joint Commission has accredited hospitals for nearly 70 years and today accredits nearly 4,000 community, academic, pediatric, long term acute, psychiatric, rehabilitation and specialty hospitals.

Hospital accreditation is validation of your commitment to patient safety and quality. It also allows you to receive Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements for treating those patient populations.

Special Survey Options

Early Survey

The Early Survey Option is reserved for organizations that do not actively care for patients yet, but must provide evidence to payers or regulators of their intent to obtain full accreditation.

Tailored Survey

For organizations seeking accreditation across multiple disciplines (i.e., ambulatory care, behavioral health, and laboratory settings), The Joint Commission offers a tailored survey option to help coordinate and streamline the application and survey process.

Certification Options

At The Joint Commission, we offer various certifications to help organizations go beyond accreditation to fulfill state mandates, achieve payer reimbursement and improve quality. Depending on the certification you wish to obtain, your hospital may need to achieve accreditation through the Hospital Accreditation Program before being able to become certified.

Certification can help hospitals to standardize care processes, reduce variation and risk, and ultimately provide consistent, safe, high quality care. There are many types of certifications for various clinical specialties such as stroke, cardiac, and orthopedic.
