The Joint Commission convened a technical advisory panel (TAP) in August 2020 to discuss potential standardized measures for the Advanced Certification for Spine Surgery (ACSS) program. The TAP was comprised of clinical experts with specific expertise in spine care, including clinical leadership from the American Spine Registry (ASR), a collaboration between the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Eight standardized performance measures were adopted from the ASR for collection in the program.

The measures are as follows:

Cervical Procedures
Advanced Certification for Spine Surgery (ACSS) Standardized Performance Measures
  • ACSS-01 Surgical Site Infection Rates-Cervical
  • ACSS-02 New Neurological Deficits-Cervical
  • ACSS-03 Unplanned Return Visit to the OR-Cervical
  • ACSS-04 Pre-operative and post-operative Patient Reported Outcomes (PRO’s)-Cervical
Lumbar Procedures
Advanced Certification for Spine Surgery (ACSS) Standardized Performance Measures
  • ACSS-05 Surgical Site Infection Rates-Lumbar
  • ACSS-06 New Neurological Deficits-Lumbar
  • ACSS-07 Unplanned Return Visit to the OR-Lumbar
