Take 5: Evaluating and Responding to Suicide Risk

Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the US for all ages, however, it is preventable. Using information obtained from over 1,000 suicides that were reported to the Sentinel Event Database between 2010-2014, The Joint Commission published a Sentinel Event Alert, “Detecting and Treating Suicide Ideation in All Settings.” It outlines recommendations for improvement in the areas of assessment, safety, discharge and follow-up, with an emphasis on community resources.
