The Joint Commission is revising two terms for the Behavioral Health Care and Human Services (BHC) program to reflect current terminology being used in the field of addiction medicine. The revised terms are:
- “Medication-assisted treatment” has been updated to “medications for substance use disorders.” If the requirement needs more specificity, the term is updated to “medications for opioid use disorder” or “medications for alcohol use disorder.”
- Detoxification has been removed and is now referred to as “withdrawal,” “withdrawal management,” or “medically supervised withdrawal management.” These revisions are editorial in nature and do not change any requirements.
These changes will go into effect Jan. 1, 2024. Questions may be directed to the Department of Standards and Survey Methods.
An Expert to Expert electronic clinical quality measure (eCQM) webinar series — presented by The Joint Commission in collaboration with and incorporating expertise from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), Mathematica, and eCQM measure stewards — is underway. These webinars are free and offer continuing education (CE) credit.
The 2024 eCQM Annual Update webinar series began with an on-demand webinar released in August on the Perinatal Care (PC) eCQMs PC-01, -05 and 06 (available for CE credit until Oct 9). Other webinar topics include:
- STK measures (Oct. 31)
- VTE measures (Nov. 7)
- Glycemia measures (December)
- Safe use of opioids (January)
Visit the Expert to Expert series website to access the registration links for future events as they become available. Several weeks after each event, the captioned recording, slides, and Q&A documents will be posted.
Participants can earn 1.5 continuing education (CE) credit during a free, 90-minute Pioneers in Quality webinar scheduled for Oct. 12 regarding 2024 ORYX® performance measurement requirements for chart-abstracted measures and electronic clinical quality measures (eCQMs) for accredited hospitals and critical access hospitals.
During the webinar, Joint Commission staff will:
- Explain ORYX policy requirements effective calendar year (CY) 2024.
- Highlight the Joint Commission measurement website resources available, including measures list, high level submission deadlines, measure specifications, FAQs, quality measurement webinars and videos.
This session’s learning objectives are to:
- Describe 2024 ORYX® chart-abstracted and eCQM performance measurement requirements for accreditation.
- Determine 2024 ORYX policies for your organization.
- Locate available resources regarding ORYX measurement requirements.
