Medication - Monitoring Patient Response

How do we monitor patient response to a newly added medication before we make it available for dispensing or ordering?

Any examples are for illustrative purposes only.
Prior to adding new medications to the formulary, monitoring processes must be established to monitor patient's response to the newly added medications before making the new medications available for dispensing or administration. Prescribing providers and staff should be educated on the organizations medication use protocols, policies, procedures to ensure medications are used appropriately and safely. Patients should be educated on the new medications and observed for the intended therapeutic benefits, allergies, or early indications of adverse effects. Depending on the medication and route of administration, some medications may require clinical and laboratory monitoring to evaluate efficacy, side effects, physical signs and clinical symptoms.
