New and Revised Laboratory Requirements Related to Proficiency Testing to Maintain Alignment with CMS
Effective January 1, 2025, The Joint Commission has new and revised proficiency testing requirements in response to revisions to the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations for laboratories. The Joint Commission has revised two elements of performance (EPs) and created one new EP to address the updated regulations. The revisions include the following:
- Requirement for laboratories to report proficiency testing results for microbiology organism identification to the highest level that they report results on patient specimens
- Satisfactory performance for unexpected antibody detection increase from 80% to 100%
- Clarification of which tests are included in the ban on improper PT referral
