American Academy of Pediatrics' Safe and Healthy Beginnings (SHB) toolkit

Hospitals with newborn nurseries and primary care practices may also be interested in the American Academy of Pediatrics' Safe and Healthy Beginnings (SHB) toolkit, which is endorsed by The Joint Commission. The SHB toolkit was created to help empower parents of newborns to be prepared for their child’s care. The toolkit includes:

• Bright Futures Parent Handout – to help prepare parents for early visits (newborn and 2-5 day).
• Caring for Your Baby Tool – addresses what parents should know upon discharge from the hospital. It is available in English and Spanish.
