Quality Check
Karen Walsh, M.S., M.T. (ASCP), CPHQ - Corporate Laboratory Quality Manager
Virtua-West Jersey Health System, Inc.
Voorhees, NJ

The Joint Commission laboratory accreditation process is collaborative and educational.  The survey team worked with us to explain the standards and made sure we had a good understanding of how the standards translate into our work. It felt like we were on the same team with the surveyors, and there were no “gotcha” moments. They shared best practices from other labs and applauded our successes.

Our pathology team was impressed with how the tracer methodology identified gaps in our current processes.

Since our hospitals are also Joint Commission accredited, we now have a standardized approach to accreditation surveys and we are no longer talking “apples and oranges.”

We were impressed with the amount of time The Joint Commission surveyors spent outside the lab assessing the integration of the laboratory’s services with other areas in the hospital.

With Joint Commission accreditation, there is more staff involvement in survey preparation, and an increased sense of staff ownership for the accreditation survey outcome. As we work on each requirement for improvement (RFI), staff can clearly relate to how we are improving our overall laboratory operations.
