Do all residents and patients (and families when needed) who are prescribed antimicrobials require education?
No. The residents and patients receiving prescribed antimicrobials upon discharge from a nursing care center are the only individuals who should be provided education on antimicrobial medications. During an accreditation survey, Joint Commission surveyors will focus on patients and residents who are discharged on antimicrobials.
Surveyors will not interview residents, patients, or family members regarding education provided on the appropriate use of prescribed antimicrobials.
