Emergency Generator - Fuel Capacity
Publish | January 01, 0001
How is the minimum required on-site fuel supply calculated?
The minimum required on-site fuel supply is determined by the licensing authority (typically the state health department). It is typically stated in hours, so the on-site fuel storage is based upon the peak building load connected to the generator, not necessarily the full load capacity of the generator unless required by the licensing authority. Seismic risk area generators are required to operate for a minimum of 96 hours without refueling. Per NFPA 110 (1999 edition) the fuel tank capacity is to be at least 133% of the required on-site fuel supply, and there is to be a low-fuel sensing device to indicate when less than the minimum fuel required remains in the main fuel tank.
