What issues must our organization consider relating to sample medications?

The following issues must be considered:
  • Individual specific medication information must be available in some fashion (MM.01.01.01)
  • The use of sample medications would need to addressed in the organization's look-alike/sound-alike list of medications (MM.01.02.01)
  • If the organization operates a pharmacy, the organization must develop criteria for determining which medications, including sample medications, are available for dispensing to individuals (MM.02.01.01)
  • Medication must be properly stored (MM.03.01.01)
  • Medications, including sample medications, brought into the organization by individuals are safely controlled by the organization (MM.03.01.05)
  • Medication orders or prescriptions are clear and accurate (MM.04.01.01)
  • Only those individuals authorized by state law and regulation may dispense sample medication that are ordered. The clinical record contains information that reflects the individual's care, treatment, or services (RC.02.01.01)
  • Medications, including sample medications, are labeled (MM.05.01.09)
  • Medications, including sample medications, are safely dispensed (MM.05.01.11)
  • The organization follows a process to retrieve recalled or discontinued medications (MM.05.01.17)
  • A log identifying the dispensing of sample medication would be helpful to track the medication if it is recalled. Information would include lot number, date of dispensing, and who received the medication. The organization safely manages unused, expired, or returned medications including sample medications (MM.05.01.19)
  • The organization monitors individuals to determine the effects of their medications (MM.07.01.01)
  • The organization responds to actual or potential adverse drug events, significant adverse drug reactions, and medication errors (MM.07.01.03)
  • The organization evaluates the effectiveness of its medication management system which includes the use of sample medications (MM.08.01.01)
  • The organization provides education and training based on each individual's needs and abilities (CTS.04.01.03)
