Evacuation Maps - Posting Requirements
Publish | January 01, 0001
Are evacuation maps required to be posted in health care organizations?

Evacuation maps (deployed within the hospital) are not the same as life safety floor plans (a maintenance and evaluation tool) required by the Joint Commission Statement of Conditions. Evacuation maps are typically user-friendly diagrams with exit routes shown. Neither Joint Commission standards nor the NFPA 101 Life Safety Code require that evacuation maps be posted in hospitals or other health care occupancies. However, there have been cases where the local or state fire marshals have required such maps. If another authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) mandates the posting of such maps, then the Joint Commission would expect compliance with that AHJ. [LS.01.01.01]
