Life Safety (LS) (Ambulatory Health Care / Ambulatory Health Care)
Office-based Surgery - Life Safety Chapter
Publish | January 01, 0001
How does the Life Safety chapter apply to Joint Commission–accredited office-based surgery practices?
The Life Safety (LS) chapter of the Accreditation Manual is no longer applicable for Joint Commission–accredited office-based surgery practices. The removal of the LS chapter aligns with revised eligibility criteria for office-based surgery practices that became effective January 1, 2015. The revised criteria limits office-based surgery practices to a business occupancy, which is an occupancy having only three or fewer patients at the same time who are either rendered incapable of self-preservation in an emergency or are undergoing general anesthesia. The LS chapter applies only to organizations classified as an ambulatory health care occupancy, which is an occupancy having at least four patients at the same time who are either rendered incapable of self-preservation in an emergency or are undergoing general anesthesia. Removal of the LS chapter will be reflected in the fall E-dition® release for office-based surgery practices and the hard copy 2016 Standards for Office-Based Surgery Practices.
