Proposed New Requirements for Complete Medication Orders for Office Based Surgery Field Review

Field Review Start Date: September 14, 2020
End Date: October 26, 2020

The Joint Commission is developing new requirements to address medication orders for the Office-Based Surgery (OBS) accreditation program. Many medication errors have been associated with incomplete and/or unclear medication orders. These errors are failures in the prescribing process that lead to or have the potential to harm the patient. To help prevent medication errors, orders must be complete and in compliance with the organization’s medication order policy. The proposed requirements will apply to OBS-accredited organizations that prescribe medications. The proposed requirements align with clinical practice guidelines for the prevention of medication errors.
