Emergency Management - Emergency Response Exercise Requirements During the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency
Can we use our actions regarding the current public health emergency as one of our Emergency Management drills?
Any examples are for illustrative purposes only.
If an organization meets the same emergency exercise documentation requirements that they would for a planned exercise, then yes, we would accept their documented response to the current pandemic. The evaluation should be broken down into the six critical areas:
If the organization desires to utilize the pandemic response for BOTH required exercises, it is necessary to document them accordingly by addressing the six critical areas from the community integration or facility-based standpoint. Please refer to the accreditation requirements found in the Emergency Management chapter to ensure appropriate documentation.

- Communication – what worked well and what did not
- Resources and assets – what resources were abundant, adequate or lacking
- Safety and security – what issues arose and how were they resolved
- Staff responsibilities - what issues arose and how were they resolved
- Utilities - what issues arose and how were they resolved
- Patient clinical and support activities - what was abundant, adequate or lacking
The organization determines how the evaluation will be documented.
