Updates to the Community-Based Palliative Care Certification Program
Effective January 1, 2021, The Joint Commission approved two new elements of performance (EP) and one revised EP for organizations that participate in the Community-Based Palliative Care (CBPC) program. The revisions are designed to improve the safety and quality of services for patients receiving palliative care and align with the 4th edition of the Clinical Practice Guidelines for Quality Palliative Care. The two new requirements (PC.01.02.01,EP 47 and PC.02.02.01, EP 25) require programs to have a process in place for assessing caregiver willingness and ability to provide care, as well as determining family and caregiver burden and identifying additional resources when needed. The revision to PC.02.01.05, EP 36 requires that programs demonstrate teamwork, including responding to referrals and offering consultations to organization staff.
