Standard Changes Resulting from Laboratory Redeeming Application Review

The Joint Commission’s laboratory deeming renewal application has been approved by the US Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) for six years as was announced in the Federal Register on May 24, 2024.

As part of CMS’s review of the deeming renewal application, The Joint Commission made changes to its elements of performance (EPs), effective August 1, 2024, that include the following:

  • Addition of calibration verification to the list of required written procedures
  • Clarification for proficiency testing related to secondary analyzers, test systems, assays, and examinations
  • Clarification of the difference between proficiency testing participation and proficiency testing performance
  • Clarification of required actions for follow-up on proficiency testing failures
