Revisions to the Environment of Care Chapter

Effective July 1, 2022, several revisions have been made to the “Environment of Care” (EC) chapter.

The changes vary across accreditation programs and include new and revised elements of performance (EPs) that clarify and/or strengthen expectations for accredited organizations as it relates to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Code. There are also two EP deletions for the Ambulatory Care, Behavioral Health and Human Services, Critical Access Hospital, Home Care, Hospital, and Office-Based Surgery programs. These EPs (EC.02.03.05, EPs 7 and 8) were deleted since most organizations no longer have water storage tanks.

In addition, EC.02.04.01, EP 11, which addresses reporting incidents of death, injury, or illness involving medical equipment, was added back for the Hospital and Critical Access Hospital programs. This requirement was inadvertently deleted in a previous revision.
