Ligatures and/or Suicide Risk Reduction - Emergency Department - Assessing Suicide Risk

Do we have to assess every patient for suicide risk who comes into the emergency department ?

Any examples are for illustrative purposes only.

No. Only patients being evaluated or treated for behavioral health conditions as their primary reason for care must be screened for suicide risk. Please reference National Patient Safety Goal NPSG found in the Hospital Accreditation Manual for additional detail in addition to Joint Commission standards and requirements regarding screening protocols.
