Having gone into effect on Sept. 1, The Joint Commission returned to its original volume eligibility requirements for its advanced Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center (TSC) and Comprehensive Stroke Center (CSC) certification programs.
Because of the coronavirus pandemic, The Joint Commission had reduced its volume eligibility requirements in 2020 and into 2021. While applying this change, The Joint Commission will still account for the reduced volume requirements that were in effect in the past. The following tables indicate the total volumes that are expected for the previous 12 months for organizations seeking recertification and initial certification for mechanical thrombectomy, aneurysm clipping/coiling, and subarachnoid hemorrhage.
With the resurgence of COVID-19 variants, The Joint Commission will continue to monitor the pandemic’s regional impact and its potential impact to the TSC and CSC certification programs. Organizations should contact their account executive if volume requirements are not met at the time of application or any time prior to review.

Improvement Insights — Improving Clinician Well-Being to Reduce Burnout: The National Taskforce for Humanity in Healthcare (NTH) focused on understanding clinician burnout by working with a broad group of U.S. physicians, nurses, clinicians, patients and health care administrators between 2015 and 2020. NTH initiated a series of national collaborations and a pilot program that is described in the September 2021 issue of The Joint Commission Journal on Quality and Patient Safety, writes William J. Maples, MD; Read G. Pierce, MD; and Ronald Paulus, MD, MBA.
Joint Commission Resources (JCR) recently launched two more versions of PolicySource™, the popular collection of sample policies and procedures (P&Ps) that correlate to Joint Commission standards. The addition of PolicySource Laboratory and PolicySource Nursing Care Center and Assisted Living Community versions round out the collection to cover each Joint Commission Accreditation program.
The Laboratory version features:
- More than 30 sample P&Ps for both laboratories in health care facilities and freestanding laboratories, with plans to add more P&Ps over time.
- More than a dozen sample P&Ps that correlate to required written documentation in Quality System Assessment for Nonwaived Testing standards, again with plans to add more P&Ps over time.
The Nursing Care Center and Assisted Living Community version features:
- More than 40 sample P&Ps for both Nursing Care Center and the new Assisted Living Community accreditation programs, with plans to add more P&Ps over time.
- Several P&Ps that address Medication Management requirements for these settings.
Like all versions of PolicySource, these two new versions will be updated twice a year (in January and July) to coordinate with Joint Commission standards updates. These updates also will include new sample P&Ps and sample attachments to assist with the implementation of P&Ps.
