The 2022 Hospital Executive Briefing — scheduled for Sept. 13 — will feature a keynote address from new Joint Commission President and CEO Jonathan B. Perlin, MD, PhD, MSHA, MACP, FACMI.
This year’s event will offer limited in-person seating at the Crowne Plaza Chicago O’Hare, 5440 N. River Road in Rosemont, Illinois. For those not participating in-person, the event also will be available via live webcast.
The event will help attendees learn how healthcare teams who strive to reduce risk, improve safety and enhance quality of care also can achieve cost containment and more resilient workplaces. Attendees also will learn about:
- Data-driven observations, trends, themes, and advice based on aggregate survey data and The Joint Commission leadership experience.
- How hospitals can continue the journey to better patient care with zero harm after emerging from a period of high-risk challenges.
- Critical topics and information from Joint Commission officers and subject matter experts.
Attendees also can make it a two-day event by taking part in the Hospital Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Update the next day on Sept. 14.

The Joint Commission is revising National Patient Safety Goal (NPSG) Standard NPSG.15.01.01, element of performance (EP) 1, of the Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for Hospitals to now include long-term acute care (LTAC) hospitals. This change will take effect on Jan. 1, 2023.
When NPSG.15.01.01 was revised for hospitals, EP 1 did not originally apply to LTAC hospitals — even while EPs 2-7 do currently apply to LTAC hospitals.
This current applicability change does not indicate a change in the survey process of LTAC hospitals but will allow The Joint Commission to score environmental risk assessment observations related to suicide prevention under NPSG.15.01.01, EP 1, which aligns with the rest of the Hospital Accreditation Program. Environmental risk assessment observations related to suicide prevention for LTAC hospitals are currently scored at Environment of Care (EC) Standard EC.02.06.01, EP 1.
Questions about the applicability may be directed The Joint Commission’s Standards Interpretation Group.
Primary Stroke Centers (PSCs) provide critical elements to achieve long-term success in improving outcomes for stroke patients. PSCs have a dedicated stroke unit and team of stroke professionals capable of delivering the medical treatment and management necessary for the acute care of stroke patients.
A free webinar will discuss performance measure requirements for PSCs with a focus on new measures for PSCs that offer not only intravenous thrombolytic therapy but also mechanical clot removal. The webinar is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 9, at 9 a.m. PT/10 a.m. MT/11 a.m. CT/noon ET.
The goals of the session are to:
- Discuss performance measures for PSCs with a focus on new measure requirements for PSCs that perform mechanical thrombectomy (MT) procedures.
- Highlight sections of the measure specifications, such as Measure Information Forms (MIFs), data elements and definitions, and measure algorithm logic.
- Answer questions from participants.
The session will be recorded and available for viewing on-demand within two hours of the live broadcast. No Continuing Education credit will be offered with this webinar.
Dateline @ TJC — The Joint Commission and CISA Collaborate on Cybersecurity Educational Resources: As the U.S. healthcare system adopts internet-connected care delivery systems, healthcare organizations are increasingly experiencing attacks from cybercriminals. In the first half of 2022, there was a 70% increase in hacks and information breaches compared to the same period in 2021. In 2021, 66% of healthcare organizations reported that they experienced a ransomware attack, writes Patrick Ross, Associate Director, Federal Relations, The Joint Commission.
