ISMP issues new guidelines on safe medication use in perioperative, procedural settings
ISMP has published the “ISMP Guidelines for Safe Medication Use in Perioperative and Procedural Settings.” These new guidelines aim to help hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers and other procedural locations address gaps in medication safety and put in place plans to reduce the risk of errors.
“The referenced guidelines published by ISMP address two of the highest risk areas we face in healthcare being surgical procedures and medication administration,” said Robert Campbell, PharmD, BCSCP, Director, Standards Interpretation Group, Director, Medication Management, The Joint Commission. “Organizations are encouraged to review these guidelines and determine what recommendations are appropriate for their setting. While each of these guidelines may not be required by Joint Commission standards, these guidelines are based on errors publicly reported and expert consensus.”
