Although there have been significant advancements over the past decades, substantial gaps in safety and quality remain in healthcare delivery, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Healthcare organizations worldwide face numerous challenges, often lacking skilled staff and resources to drive quality and patient safety improvements.
A strategic initiative from Joint Commission International – JCI Patient Safety Pathways – aims to develop, strengthen, sustain, and enhance patient safety policies and procedures with actionable plans, especially for organizations in the early stages of establishing quality infrastructure. The Pathways initiative consists of three components:
1. JCI Patient Safety Grand Rounds: A virtual discussion series that engages thought leaders in patient safety at policy, systems, and healthcare delivery levels through open dialogue, collaborative learning, problem solving, and sharing of best practices and success stories. The inaugural webinar took place on April 30 and focused on challenges and opportunities in patient safety. Dr. Jonathan B. Perlin, The Joint Commission and Joint Commission International, and Dr. Neelam Dhingra, Joint Commission International, were joined by international patient safety champion Sir Liam Donaldson.

2. JCI Training of Trainers Program: Patient Safety Champions: The Training of Trainers program aims to develop a cadre of trainers into patient safety champions. These champions will be equipped with the necessary knowledge and tools to then help develop skills and competencies for other healthcare professionals, fostering a culture of safety at the national and organizational level. The program includes a structured curriculum and training materials aligned with JCI standards and the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Patient Safety Action Plan 2021-2030. Virtual training of the first cohort for the Training of Trainers program will start in third quarter 2025.
3. JCI Patient Safety Technical Support: Tailored technical support to select healthcare organizations from low- and middle-income countries based on their identified needs and gaps using the JCI Patient Safety Pathways Assessment Tool for healthcare organizations. The tool is aligned with JCI standards and the WHO Global Patient Safety Action Plan 2021-2030.

Perlin, and Alexandra Drane, CEO of ARCHANGELS, frames caregivers as the invisible backbones of our economies that we can all do more to support.
