Take Time to Reflect ... the Best is Yet to Come!

I am often accused of not taking time to reflect on accomplishments. Instead, I just move briskly from one goal to the next. Yet, there is one time when I break this habit – as the year comes to an end. It’s one time when I am reminded to slow down and reflect on the triumphs and challenges of the prior year. So I am easing up on the gas and giving myself the time and space to reflect on all that happened in home care in 2014. I hope you will do the same.

Charting a course for success

As a child, I remember being fascinated by the sextant on my father’s desk. It was more than just an odd-looking contraption, he would explain. It was a tool used by expert mariners to navigate their ships safely across the unseen dangers of the oceans. Even one degree off in their calculations would result in their ships sailing miles off course, so they checked their measurements regularly along their journeys.

Learning to speak the language of today’s health care

One of the reasons why I like working at The Joint Commission is that it’s one of the few places I’ve worked where data and consensus-based evidence trumps opinion. To be a valued partner in today’s health care world, it’s not enough to say your work is good. You must have data that illustrates your capability to manage the important aspects of your care. The key then becomes being able to take that evidence and speak the emerging language of healthcare. That’s where we come in.
