Active Shooter Planning and Response in a Healthcare Setting

National council updates active-shooter guide (March 2017)

Active shooter events are becoming increasingly more common, and while there have been recommendations on how to respond since 2008, these guidelines focused on schools, government, and business settings. In January of 2014, the Healthcare and Public Health Sector Coordinating Council (HPH SCC) released the “Active Shooter Planning and Response in a Healthcare Setting”. That draft document was the first comprehensive guidance written for healthcare facilities to prevent, respond to, and recover from an active shooter event. This updated document includes law enforcement tactics and integrated medical and mental health response.

Active Shooter Preparedness Resources

DHS (Department of Homeland Security) has developed a series of materials to assist businesses, government offices, and schools in preparing for and responding to an active shooter. These resources include a detailed booklet, a desk reference guide, a reference poster, and a pocket-size reference card. DHS has also developed both a Recovery Guide, and an Incident Fact Sheet to assist your organization as you consider the recovery phase of an event.
