Joint Commission accreditation is viewed as a statement of quality. It says to the public that this hospital is a good place to receive care. Accreditation also has value in stimulating error reduction and efficiency.
Accreditation is a good sensitizer to patient and staff satisfaction and efficiency. It makes the case for patient-centered care. We initiated a new program, Patient Safety Fridays, where staff go to different areas and focus on different aspects of safety. This has had a strong effect on the institution and has powerfully improved staff morale.
