April 16, 2012, is the Fifth Annual National Healthcare Decisions Day, a day created to inspire, educate and empower the public and health care providers about the importance of advance care planning. One of the objectives of NHDD is to improve the ability of health care facilities and providers to offer informed and thoughtful guidance about advance health care planning to their patients. Learn more about National Healthcare Decisions Day and get free information at the National Healthcare Decisions Day website or visit the NHDD Facebook page. According to a 2006 Pew Research Center study, 71 percent of Americans have thought about their end-of-life treatment preferences, 95 percent have heard of a living will, but only 29 percent have a living will. The National Healthcare Decisions Day Initiative is a collaborative effort of national, state and community organizations committed to ensuring that all adults with decision-making capacity in the United States have the information and opportunity to communicate and document their health care decisions.
