The Joint Commission and the National Association of Psychiatric Health Systems (NAPHS), the National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors (NASMHPD) and the NASMHPD Research Institute, Inc. (NRI) have finished work on a set of core performance measures for Hospital-Based Inpatient Psychiatric Services (HBIPS). Pilot testing for the HBIPS measures has concluded, and the Technical Advisory Panel (TAP) for the HBIPS project convened in February 2008 to recommend a final measure set.
The 7 measures in the HBIPS measure set are available for selection beginning with October 1, 2008 discharges for free-standing psychiatric hospitals and acute-care hospitals with psychiatric units. New information on ORYX requirements and reporting (posted July 2010) is available.
Updates to the measure set may be posted from time to time as they become available.
The HBIPS measures can be found in the Specifications Manual for Joint Commission National Quality Core Measures. Submit your questions about HBIPS measure specifications to the Performance Measurement Network Q&A Forum.
