In order to address the dearth of hospital performance measures relevant to children’s healthcare, an industry-wide initiative known as the Pediatric Data Quality Systems (Pedi-QS) evaluated asthma measures submitted by children’s hospitals across the United States.

In collaboration with national children’s health care organizations, particularly, the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI), Child Health Corporation of America (CHCA), and Medical Management Planning, Inc. (MMP), the Joint Commission developed a subset of these measures for possible inclusion in the ORYX® performance measurement initiatives.

The Joint Commission completed testing at 26 volunteer pilot hospitals and reconvened the CAC Advisory Panel in November 2005. Children's Asthma Care pilot performance measure results were presented and discussed.  Both the CAC Advisory Panel and the Joint Commission recommended that three CAC measures move toward national implementation. These are:

  • Use of Relievers for Inpatient Asthma (NQF-endorsed Voluntary Consensus Standard for Hospital Care)
  • Use of Systemic Corticosteroids for Inpatient Asthma (NQF-endorsed Voluntary Consensus Standard for Hospital Care)
  • Home Management Plan of Care Given to Patient/Caregiver

Implementation timeline will be posted as it becomes available.  Please, direct inquiries to oryxcore@jointcommission.org
