Tailoring Initiatives to Meet the Needs of Diverse Populations:
A Self-Assessment Tool

A self-assessment tool is provided in Chapter 8 of One Size Does Not Fit All: Meeting the Health Care Needs of Diverse Populations to help organizations evaluate the way they currently provide care and services to diverse patient populations. The tool is intended to address the main issues that emerged from the HLC study, and the questions are designed to promote discussion around the need to improve or expand current initiatives to meet patients’ cultural and language (C&L) needs.

Methods for Conducting Self-Assessment
The goal of this tool is to engage diverse staff members from different sectors of the organization to come together and explore how they are currently addressing patients’ C&L needs. Organizations will likely find different ways to use the self-assessment tool, and some may consider using a combination of methods to conduct their self-assessment.

  • Focus groups
  • In-services
  • Lunch meetings
  • Seminar series
  • Small-group interviews
  • Staff retreat
  • Targeted interviews

Using the Self-Assessment Tool
The self-assessment tool is presented in Chapter 8 of One Size Does Not Fit All: Meeting the Health Care Needs of Diverse Populations. For organizations that wish to enter their responses electronically, the complete set of questions is available in Microsoft Word format. The questions have also been separated by theme.

We invite you to fill out an evaluation form for the self-assessment tool.  Participation is voluntary, but we hope you will provide feedback and comments on your experience.
