Meet the HLC Staff

Amy Wilson-Stronks, MPP, CPHQ, Principal Investigator
Amy is Project Director for Health Disparities Work in the Division of Standards and Survey Methods. She is leading ongoing research investigations of the data collected during the HLC study, directing the work of The Joint Commission to assess and evaluate accreditation standards related to culturally and linguistically appropriate services, and is developing a comprehensive surveyor training program on these issues. She serves on a number of National Advisory Committees on subjects related to the provision of culturally and linguistically appropriate services. Amy earned her Master of Public Policy in Health Policy and a Graduate Certificate in Health Administration and Policy from the University of Chicago, and is a Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ). Christina Cordero, PhD, MPH, Senior Research Associate
Tina is a Senior Research Associate in the Division of Standards and Survey Methods working on the HLC study. She is currently managing the Juan Lopez project, an investigation of one LEP man's experience at 60 different hospitals, and is involved in accreditation standards and surveyor training activities. Tina earned both her Doctor of Philosophy in Immunology and Microbial Pathogenesis and Master of Public Health degrees from Northwestern University. Karen Lee, MS, Senior Research Associate
Karen is a Senior Research Associate in the Division of Standards and Survey Methods working on the HLC study. She is currently managing dissemination activities including presentations, communication materials, and other collaborations. Prior to joining The Joint Commission, she was developing consumer-oriented multimedia education materials on various health topics with State of the Art, Inc. April Kopp, MA, MFA, Consultant
April is a consultant for the HLC study. She earned her Master of Arts degree in clinical social work at the University of Chicago, and she earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in writing from the University of Iowa. She has worked for the VA Information Resource Center (VIReC) at Hines VA Hospital as well as the University Hygienic Laboratory of Iowa, and she formerly co-directed a nonprofit organization, The Patient Voice Project, with Austin Bunn. She is a co-editor of Advocates’ Forum, a graduate social work journal of the University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration. Isa Rodriguez, Senior Secretary
Isa has many years of experience in health care settings, most recently as the Business Office Manager for the 900 North Michigan Surgery Center in Chicago. Shelby Dunster, BA, Research Advisor
Shelby is a Director in the Division of Standards and Survey Methods. She represented The Joint Commission on the National Advisory Panel that developed the CLAS standards and served on the advisory board for the Office of Minority Health contract with RAND for the development of a cultural competency tool for hospitals. Shelby earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from Loyola University in Chicago.

Erica Galvez, MA, Research Advisor
Erica is an Associate Project Director in the Center for Quality, Patient Safety, and Innovation Research. Her current research focuses on various aspects of health care quality and safety, with a specific emphasis on vulnerable populations. She is the co-author of Exploring Cultural and Linguistic Services in the Nation’s Hospitals: A Report of Findings. She earned her Master of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of Colorado, Boulder.

Maureen Carr, MBA, Research Advisor
Maureen is a Project Director in the Division of Standards and Survey Methods. She manages several ongoing projects related to Joint Commission standards and evaluation methods. Ms. Carr has been with the Joint Commission for more than 25 years, and has worked in a number of different areas including Accreditation Operations, Planning, and Board and Committee Activities. Ms. Carr received her Bachelor’s degree from John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio, and her Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Loyola University of Chicago.
