Alan C. Woodward, M.D., F.A.C.E.P, is president of the Massachusetts Medical Society and chief of Emergency Services at Emerson Hospital in Concord, Mass.
A member of the Massachusetts Medical Society since 1983, Woodward has served on its Board of Trustees, House of Delegates and numerous committees and task forces. He has also held many leadership positions within his specialty, including president of the Massachusetts College of Emergency Physicians and councilor to the House of Delegates of the American College of Emergency Physicians. He has served on the Massachusetts Department of Public Health's Statewide Diversion Task Force, the Regional Emergency Medicine Services Advisory Committee and the State Emergency Medical Care Advisory Board. In addition, Woodward serves on Emergency Physician Advisory Committees at Tufts Associated Health Plans, Harvard-Pilgrim Health Care and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts.
Woodward joined Emerson Hospital in 1989 and is immediate past president of the medical staff. He has also served as a member of the hospital and independent physician association's Boards of Directors and on its Medical Executive, Professional Review and Strategic Planning committees.
Woodward has received accolades and awards for his contributions to emergency medicine from groups including the Massachusetts College of Emergency Physicians, the Massachusetts Medical Society and the Metropolitan Boston Emergency Medical Services Council.
Woodward earned his medical degree from the Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, his master's degree in Bioengineering at Columbia University in New York, and his bachelor's degree from Lafayette College in Easton, Penn. He completed his internship at Newton-Wellesley Hospital in Newton Lower Falls, Mass., and his residency in Emergency Medicine at Wake Forest University School of Medicine and the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C. He is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians.
