Building the "Hospital of the Future"

Rita Munley Gallagher, PhD, RN                                 

Rita Munley Gallagher, PhD, RN serves as Senior Policy Fellow in the Department of Nursing Practice and Policy of the American Nurses Association (ANA) in Silver Spring, Maryland.  As such, she is charged with identifying, researching, analyzing, conducting, writing, coordinating and reporting on health policy activities related to ANA priorities.  In this role, she prepares and provides input for development of policy statements and legislative testimony for the association. 

In addition, Dr. Gallagher serves as ANA’s organizational liaison to The Joint Commission, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), AQA, the American Medical Association (AMA)-Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement (PCPI) and the National Quality Forum (NQF).  She has been a member of the NQF Improving Use of Medications Workshop, The Joint Commission Hospital of the Future Roundtable, and the AMA-PCPI Medication Reconciliation Workgroup.

Prior to coming to ANA, Dr. Gallagher had over ten years experience in the education of health care professionals in the academic setting, first at a state supported university as a tenured Associate Professor in the School of Nursing and lastly at a small, private liberal arts college where she directed the School of Nursing.

Dr. Gallagher is a member of a number of professional organizations including the American Public Health Association, where she has been elected to the Governing Council representing the Public Health Nursing Section.   She has been a member of the United States Pharmacopeial (USP) Convention, representing ANA, since 2000.  She has also been appointed to the USP Council of the Convention where she chairs the Quality of Patient Care Section.  Dr. Gallagher serves on the Steering Committee of the Coalition to Prevent Deep Vein Thrombosis.   She previously served as Secretary/Treasurer of the Board of Directors of the American Medical Directors Association Foundation. In 2007 she received the Association of State and Territorial Directors of Nursing Recognition Award.
