A new Department of Health and Human Services-funded report says that U.S. hospitals are significantly better prepared for disasters and public health emergencies today than they were in 2001. Increased emphasis placed by accreditation organizations such as The Joint Commission was cited as a significant driver of this improvement. “Hospitals Rising to the Challenge: The First Five Years of the U.S. Hospital Preparedness Program and Priorities Going Forward,” prepared by the Center of Biosecurity of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, notes the importance of Joint Commission accreditation throughout the report.
