This column informs you of developments and potential revisions that can affect your accreditation and certification and tracks proposed changes before they are implemented. Items may drop off this list before the approval stage if they were rejected at some point in the process.

APPROVED

  • Revisions to the 2010 accreditation and certification decision rules for all programs (see article on page 7)
  • Policy on accrediting hospitals in accordance with their Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) certification number (see future Perspectives issue for more detail)

 

ACCEPTED

  • Proposed revisions to align with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) opioid treatment programs requirements for the behavioral health care program
  • Proposed revisions to align with CMS distinct part units (DPU) requirements for the critical access hospital program (see article on page 4)

 

CURRENTLY IN DEVELOPMENT

STANDARDS

  • Proposed standards on communication and culturally competent patient-centered care for the hospital program
  • Revisions to the current National Patient Safety Goals using the Standards Improvement Initiative principles for the ambulatory care, behavioral health care, critical access hospital, home care, hospital, laboratory, long term care, Medicare/Medicaid certification–based long term care, and office-based surgery programs.
    (Note: No new goals have been developed.)
  • Proposed revisions to the staffing effectiveness requirements for the hospital and long term care programs (see article on page 1)
