Q. For which patients should the dysphagia screen be performed?

A. The Disease Specific Care Stroke Performance Measure 7 (DSC Stroke: 7) - Dysphagia Screening states that a screen for dysphagia should be performed on all ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke patients prior to being given anything by mouth including food, fluids or oral medications.  Therefore, the patient must remain NPO until a dysphagia screen has been completed.
