Bilateral Procedures

Q. Is site marking required for bilateral procedures?

A. The Universal Protocol is designed to prevent wrong site, wrong procedure and wrong person surgery.  While The Joint Commission's site marking requirement has focused on lateral procedures or those that involve multiple levels, organizations should consider that it is possible to perform the wrong bilateral procedure.  Therefore, site marking for bilateral procedures (identical procedure, surgical team and equipment) is recommended but not required.
