Temperature Recording, Monitoring, Alarms and Back-Up Storage

Q:  What is required for temperature monitoring of tissue?

A:  For tissues stored in refrigerators, freezers and nitrogen tanks, organizations should have the following:

  1. Temperature recording at least once daily, documented manually, mechanically, or electronically.
  2. Continuous temperature monitoring with an alarm system which is responded to 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  Note:  Continuous temperature recording is not required, but may be available with some  continuous temperature monitoring systems.
  3. Back-up storage plan which is implemented if the primary storage equipment fails.

For tissues stored at room temperature, the temperature must simply be recorded at least once daily.  Continuous temperature monitoring and alarm systems are not required.
