Capacity of Soiled Linen and Trash Receptacles

Q. Is it acceptable to have containers that are designed with a capacity greater than 32 gallons in a healthcare or ambulatory occupancy?

A. Yes, provided they are in a room designated as a hazardous area as defined in Life Safety Chapter (see also NFPA 101-2000 18/19.7.5.5; 18/19.3.2.1 and 20/21.7.5.5).

If the container is located in the area outside of a hazardous room and has the capacity to exceed 32 gallons the following will need to occur:

  1. A means to limit the internal capacity (such as an insert) to < 32gallons (.5 gallons per square foot in any 64 square foot area)
  2. Ability to field verify the modified capacity (i.e. open door to visually confirm the insert is in place)
  3. Label on container clearly indicating the modified capacity
