Accreditation Process

Multihospital System Survey Option

If your system owns or operates at least two hospitals, you may be able to use the Joint Commission multihospital systems survey option. When you participate in this process, we assign you one systems coordinator as your single point of contact with us.

The survey fees for individual organizations participating in the multihospital systems option are the same as those for separately surveyed hospitals. We do not accredit your corporation. Each participating organization receives its own accreditation decision and report. The results for one organization don't influence those of another organization in your system.

Advantages of multihospital participation

  • You'll have one survey team leader for all your hospitals, providing the process continuity needed to track system-wide trends.
  • We'll assign your team leader six months before start of your system surveys.
  • We'll schedule your tailored survey components in advance.
  • Our surveyors are able to identify best practices to share with all participants in your system.
  • Your corporate representative's single contact is a dedicated Joint Commission corporate account representative.
  • Your system's corporate representative receives copies of all participating organizations' survey reports.
  • The corporate orientation and corporate summation allow you and the surveyors to share information and set goals.
  • You can use your survey preparation time to build cohesion between member hospitals and create consistency between organizations.

What is a a corporate orientation?
Our hospital survey team conducts your corporate orientation the day before the start of the first scheduled survey. Surveyors visit your corporate headquarters (or other designated location) to learn about your system operations and the relationship between your corporate office and the member organizations they will survey.

Key components of a corporate orientation:

  • Your corporate staff members can develop a personalized agenda.
  • Our surveyors get an overview of your system's organization so they understand how your member organizations function.
  • The surveyors can review centralized corporate services, documentation, and policies and procedures for which we have standards.
  • You get the chance to share your systems' mission, vision, and goals with the surveyors.
  • Your staff can orient the surveyors to your system's structure and practices.
  • Survey team members can respond to your questions about the survey process.
  • Your corporate staff can share goals for individual organizations. For example, is one of your organizations doing well at something that others can be doing? Are you concerned about a particular organization and would like surveyor feedback?

What is a corporate summation?
When all your surveys are completed, the survey team will return to your corporate headquarters (or other designated location) and give you an analysis of the survey findings, including your organizations' strengths and areas needing improvement.

Key components of a corporate summation:

  • Our surveyors consult with you about systemwide accreditation survey findings.
  • Surveyors share systemwide trends with your corporate staff.
  • You get an objective assessment of your systems' overall strengths and weaknesses.
  • You may have both the corporate orientation and corporate summation, or only one. However, if you participate in the multihospital system survey option, you must select one of the two.

Please call the systems coordinator at 630-792-5838 or 630-792-5719 to discuss how our multihospital system survey option can provide a seamless survey process for your entire system.
