ORYX

Modified Oryx Participation Requirements
Behavioral Health Care Accreditation Program
Effective October 2002

Updated 1/21/04

The following modifications to current ORYX performance measurement requirements for accredited Behavioral Health Care organizations and those seeking accreditation become effective immediately.  These modifications will remain in effect until such time as relevant core measures are identified and implemented by the Joint Commission.

While these temporary modifications no longer require organizations that are accredited under the Joint Commission's Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for Behavioral Health Care and provide 24-hour care services to participate with a listed performance measurement system, the Joint Commission encourages those organizations to consider taking advantage of the option of continuing to participate with a listed measurement system and submitting ORYX performance measure data to the Joint Commission.  Participation in a listed performance measurement system will provide comparative data that may not otherwise be readily available.  Continued participation in a listed performance measurement system also will help facilitate ongoing compliance with performance measurement and improvement requirements as detailed in the Joint Commission's Behavioral Health Care standards.

  • Behavioral health care organizations that provide 24-hour behavioral health care services and are surveyed and accredited under the Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for Behavioral Health Care

OPTION 1:

  • Discontinue the submission of ORYX performance measure data to the Joint Commission through a listed measurement system.
  • Identify six performance measures from among the universe of measures.
  • Collect data internally and generate either run charts or control charts on each measure, at least quarterly, for use in internal quality improvement activities.
  • No data are required to be submitted to the Joint Commission.
  • Data reports will need to be available for review by surveyors during onsite surveys, and produced upon request of the Joint Commission.
  • At the time of survey, discuss how the data were used in identifying priorities for performance improvement activities.

OPTION 2:

  • Continue to participate with a listed performance measurement system.
  • Submit aggregate monthly data to the Joint Commission on six performance measures.
  • At the time of survey, discuss how the data were used in identifying priorities for performance improvement activities.
  • Behavioral health care organizations that provide non-24 hour behavioral health care services ONLY and are surveyed and accredited under the Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for Behavioral Health Care

NO CHANGE IN REQUIREMENTS:

  • Continue to collect data internally on six performance measures identified from among the universe of measures.
  • Generate either run charts or control charts on each measure, at least quarterly, for use in internal quality improvement activities.
  • No data are required to be submitted to the Joint Commission.
  • Data reports will need to be available for review by surveyors during onsite surveys, and produced upon request of the Joint Commission.
  • At the time of survey, discuss how the data were used in identifying priorities for performance improvement activities.
  • Surveyed under the Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for Behavioral Health Care AND provide 24-hour and/or non-24 hour behavioral health care services accredited under the Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for Behavioral Health Care
