Designating Controlled and/or Sensitive Areas

Q. Does the Joint Commission recommend what areas are to be classified as sensitive?

A. No, in determining sensitive areas, the organization is expected to evaluate the impact external forces could have on the area in question through a proactive risk assessment and implement procedures based on its analysis. Access control is determined by the organization (keys or special card access).  The method is up to the organization provided that the method does not conflict with the Life Safety Code (NFPA 101-2000).
